About SoundWave

From Conversation to Connection

At the heart of SoundWave lies a fascination with the way we talk, and its immense power to transform the way we connect with each other.

Our passion to drive change and transformation through the personal influence and impact of our talk led us to develop SoundWave’s iconic 3 Verbal Styles, the 9 SoundWave Voices (aka Verbal Strategies), the SoundWave Arc of Connection and our suite of tools like the Brilliance 3, SoundWave Self Perception and the SoundWave 360 to guide people in strengthening their human-to-human connections.

THE SOUNDWAVE ARC OF CONNECTION

Making The Connections You Need

Every conversation can potentially deepen connections or create distances.  The voices we use, the words we choose and how we use them to determine the quality and outcomes of our interpersonal relationships. This fundamental concept illuminates the intentional focus on building meaningful relationships between people through our talk.

The SoundWave Arc of Connection shows the 5 different connections that can affect our relationships with others through our talk – Recognition, Rapport, Respect, Trust, and Commitment.

1. RECOGNITION: I See You

Recognising others is to acknowledge, include or notice their presence, value and contributions.  These are some of the key basic fundamental needs in every quality and productive relationship and it is a starting point for all other meaningful connections.

When others feel that we see them through our talk, it affects their sense of safety and inclusion with us.

2. RAPPORT: I Need You

Creating rapport is the reciprocity of interacting with each other in finding shared interests, common grounds, and mutual understanding in building a sense of positive and harmonious relationship with one another.  It is a necessary precondition for effective collaboration in the sharing of knowledge, skills and resources.

When others feel that we need them through our talk, it affects their sense of empowerment, role and value with us.

3. RESPECT: I Value You

Respect is the continuous forging of a bond which acknowledges differences in the role and perspectives of each other.  It is a growing appreciation for each other’s qualities and a deepening of mutual understanding.  It is treating each person with dignity, fairness and courtesy regarding or regardless of their position, abilities or background.

When others feel respected by us through our talk, it affects their sense of well-being, self-esteem and motivation with us.

4. TRUST: I Believe in You

People trust us when they experience credibility, capability and compassion when they are with us.  We build trust with others when others experience us as

  •  Credible – Being authentic in our talk
  • Capable –  Being competent in what we talk about and
  • Compassionate – Showing care and concern with whom we are talking to.

When others feel that they can trust us in our talk, it affects their sense of confidence, reliance, security, achievement and peace of mind with us.

5. Commitment: I am With You

Commitment is the total unhesitating belief in the cause and alignment of self with the organisation.  Where there is unwavering commitment, it inspires and motivates each other to be dreaming bigger, working harder, pushing farther and seizing opportunities for both personal and organizational breakthrough, growth and development.

Our talk can inspire others to greater commitment.  When others feel that they are committed to us, it affects their sense of responsibility, loyalty, boldness and investment in our shared goals and ideals.

SoundWave’s Three Verbal Styles

Unveiling Our Talk

Every individual has a unique talent and preference for directing conversations towards positive outcomes and responding to others at the moment with sensitivity and thoughtfulness. We are habitually and unconsciously competent in our talk through these three primary verbal styles that we communicate in: Ask, Suggest, Tell.

Ask

The ‘Ask’ verbal style involves using questions to gather information, clarify, and engage others in conversation. Questions play a crucial role in our dialogue with others, and they range from open, closed, leading, and detailed. Those who prefer this style often do so to promote discussion and exploration.

Suggest

The ‘Suggest’ verbal style is an intermediate point between asking and telling—it requires involving the considerations of others as well as making recommendations or proposing ideas. Those who prefer this style may offer suggestions as a way to guide the conversation, or to help others see a different perspective or option.

Tell

The ‘Tell’ verbal style involves conveying information or sharing knowledge in a direct way. Those who prefer this style may be comfortable taking charge of the conversation and asserting their ideas and opinions.

Why Should I Know How I Talk?

No, we’re not reading your mind—it’s what the people are asking. Why is it so important for us to know how we’re communicating, and why do we need to communicate better, when we’re already doing fine?

Simply put, how you talk makes the difference between mediocre and extraordinary. Despite what we may think, our actual communication patterns may differ from our perceived ones. Knowing how you talk is crucial because it can greatly impact your ability to achieve your desired outcomes in conversations.

According to SoundWave data,

  • People think they are offering solutions (diagnose) far less than they are in fact heard to do.
  • People believe they are explaining themselves (articulate) more than they are in fact heard to do.
  • Probe, Critique and Correct are the truly edgy and socially risky voices. On average they are heard as the dominant voice only 6% of the time.
  • Managers report their Team Members proffering solutions (diagnose), challenging (challenge) and explaining (articulation) themselves more than other respondent groups
  • Team members report the voices of inquire, challenge and advise as the voices they hear their managers use most

Understanding how you talk and communicate with others is crucial to building strong relationships, achieving your goals, and making a positive impact in the world. By gaining insights into your SoundWave, you can learn how to connect more effectively with others, build trust and rapport, and express your ideas with clarity and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

SoundWave is a suite of analytical tools (Brilliance 3, Self-Perception and 360) and development processes and frameworks which help people to understand how their preferred style of communication impacts those around them, enabling or limiting their performance.

SoundWave is unique also in that it looks to establish perceptions about the quality of people’s listening as well as of their talk. It seeks to challenge the erroneous belief (based often on a misunderstanding of the experiments of Albert Mehrabian) that so much the greater proportion of communication occurs through ‘non-verbal’ communication.

The SoundWave Brilliance, Self-Perception and 360 questionnaires are made up of 27 questions in total. Participants taking the questionnaire would have to allot a maximum of 5 points across 3 statements provided in each view.

The outcomes of the questionnaires—the SoundWave reports, provide data which is the basis for an interpretation and understanding of how someone talks and the effects that their talk might have.

Communication assessments and frameworks tend to focus on identifying and overcoming weaknesses. SoundWave highlights the strengths in your talk, providing personalised data insights based on analysis of your communication patterns. We then provide you with processes and frameworks for you to leverage the strengths in your conversational style to fill in the gap.

By bringing intentionality and process into how you talk, we empower you to be more courageous and confident in how you talk, build stronger connections, and achieve your intended outcomes.
